Description
The Poole family chest tomb, located one metre north of the nave at the Church of St John the Evangelist, is an early 19th-century structure created by J Withey of Taunton. It is made of Portland and blue lias stones and features a flat top, ashlar columns, and a chamfered plinth. The north front is inscribed at length in memory of Captain Robert Poole, who died in 1833 and is described as "a man distinguished alike by an enterprising spirit and inflexible integrity." The west end bears a brief inscription for Joseph Poole, who "after sailing round the Globe with Captain Cooke departed this life October 3rd 1791." The account of Captain Poole's life is noted for its edifying qualities.
