Description

This is an early 19th-century house situated in Staplegrove. It is constructed with a render over rubble, featuring a shallow-pitch slate roof with a catslide at the rear, overhanging eaves, and decorative bargeboards with terminals continued on the right return. Brick stacks are located on the gable ends. The house has a double-pile plan, running east-west. It's linked by a single-bay addition to the east to a converted farmbuilding running north-south, and it abuts the outbuildings of Norwood (listed separately).

The two-storey, three-bay front features 16-pane sash windows, with ground-floor casements comprising four vertical lights and marginal glazing bars. A semicircular-headed French window with a tracery fanlight sits centrally, fronted by a seven-bay ogee-headed wooden trelliswork verandah with a slate roof. A 16-pane sash window illuminates the right return above a half-glazed door with a slidelight. The left return includes a random rubble, single-bay wing linking to a converted, rendered cob farmbuilding with a slate roof, coped verges, and a brick gable stack. A 12-pane sash window and a three-light casement are situated below the main front, while a dormer window sits above a door at the rear gable.

The decorative bargeboards and ogee-headed bays of the verandah combine well with the earlier, less ornate farmhouse, Norwood (listed separately), which sits to the left. The property was formerly known as The Lawns.
