Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church dating back to the 15th century, with significant alterations and additions in the 17th century and a 19th-century restoration, including a chancel designed by William Butterfield. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble with gabled and lean-to lead roofs, topped with copings and cruciform finials. The church comprises a nave, chancel, a north aisle, a north vestry, a south porch, a south chapel, and a west tower.

The tower is of perpendicular design and rises in five stages. It features angle buttresses to the lower three stages, then diagonal buttresses above, and a pierced parapet with pinnacles. An embattled stair turret is present. The bell chamber has narrow two-light windows on each level, and the west side features three crocketted niches, each with a figure, along with a west window, west door, and a collar of blank arcading to the spire.

The nave, north aisle and south chapel have three-light windows. The south chapel has two bays, while the north aisle has five bays, built slightly later and featuring exterior buttresses. The north aisle has a pierced parapet with pinnacles. The south porch was restored, revealing traces of wall painting inside, and incorporating a 15th-century south door. The chancel was rebuilt in 1845.

Inside, the nave is dominated by a ribbed plaster ceiling with three pendants, dated 1637. The north aisle and south chapel have 19th-century lean-to roofs, the north aisle's supported by angel corbels. The south chapel contains a two-bay arcade with piers featuring four-hollow mouldings, while the north aisle has a five-bay arcade and piers with four-wave mouldings. The south chapel has crocketted niches to either side of the south window, and a larger restored niche in the north aisle. A 15th-century sedilla and a triple piscina are located in the chancel.

A west gallery incorporates part of the rood screen dated 1635, featuring carved columns with vine decoration and Ionic capitals. A 1635 pulpit, an emphatic eagle lectern from the 15th century, and a 1734 bier are also present. Other furnishings include 19th-century royal arms, a 17th-century chest, a 19th-century font, 19th-century pews, an 18th-century coffin stool.

Recumbent figures, a 14th-century effigy of a priest in the south chapel and another in the north aisle, are noteworthy. An 18th-century wall monument is in the chancel, alongside four further 19th-century monuments, with the most elaborate in the south chapel commemorating the Reed family, designed by Casentini of Laibeth. There are two 19th-century stained glass windows at the east end of the north aisle, fragments of earlier glass in the northeast chancel window, and further stained glass, particularly in the north aisle and the east and west windows. The north west window in the chancel dates to 1935 and is in the style of Rex Whistler. Encaustic tiles are laid in the chancel.
