Description
The Brent Knoll War Memorial is a war memorial erected around 1920. It is made of carved stone and is located to the west of the Church of St Michael. The memorial features a freestanding lantern cross that stands on a moulded octagonal platform. It consists of a three-stepped octagonal pedestal topped by a square base, which is carved to create an octagonal top. The shaft begins square at the base and is chamfered with broach stops to form an octagon, which then flares outwards above the annulet to support the lantern cross.
The lantern cross is adorned with decorative tracery-style and foliate carvings on each side. The east face features a relief carving of the Crucifixion of Christ, flanked by figures of the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist. An inscription carved in relief around the face of the top step reads:
1914-1918/ REMEMBER WITH THANKSGIVING/THE BRENT KNOLL/MEN WHO GAVE /THEIR LIVES IN/THE SERVICE OF/ THEIR COUNTRY.
The names of seventeen men who died are inscribed on the riser of the second step. The date ‘1939-45’ is carved on the east face of the bottom step, with the names of six men from the parish who died inscribed on either side.
