Description

The building is a former stable located to the north-east of Ashwick Court, dated 1698, with 19th and 20th century alterations, and late 20th century rebuilding. It has now been converted for domestic use.

Constructed from Doulting rubble, the stable features dressed quoins and an ashlar door surround. The raised ashlar-coped verge on the east side is supported by a small stone corbel on the south side, and the pitched roof is slated. The building has a rectangular plan aligned west to east, with a lean-to on the east elevation, likely from the 19th century. To the west, it is attached to a cottage.

The south front has a central entrance with a two-light window above, both framed by a single ashlar surround. The doorway features an emphasized keystone, and above the window is a stone inscribed with the date 1698. The wall shows some patching. The eastern gable includes a round pigeon hole, and the eastern lean-to, which has a tiled roof, has a wide opening facing south. The rebuilt north wall features a large central archway accessed by stone steps, with windows on either side that have single mullions, positioned slightly lower than those on the original elevation. At eaves level to the east, there is a horizontal opening that follows the original pattern.

Inside, the current layout includes a central passage with a room on each side. The original stalls and fittings have been removed, and the rooms are now lined with modern boarding. The roof structure consists of Victorian sawn softwood with metal fixings, incorporating some reused earlier timbers.
