Description
The stables at Woodhouselee date from the earlier to mid-19th century and are arranged around a symmetrical U-shaped courtyard. They have been converted to domestic use. The exterior is of snecked rubble stonework with polished ashlar and droved ashlar dressings, and have slated pitched and piended roofs with masonry skews. Modern slappings, glazing, and roof lights have been added as alterations.
The west-facing entrance elevation is symmetrical, with pedimented gables on the north and south ranges framing an open-sided entrance. The entrance is marked by snecked rubble screen walls linked to simple square-plan ashlar piers, which originally had flat pyramid caps, but now have ball finials. The left (north) gable has an open pediment, while the right (south) gable is closed. Polished ashlar long and short quoins are present. Each gable has a three-light window, with ogee-arched lancet windows and original timber sash and case glazing (two panes over two). The centre light of the left gable is blocked, and the lower sash of the centre light on the right gable has lost its glazing. A square hood mould sits above each window, and there is a single, unglazed oculus in each pediment. Coped block finials are above the skewputts and apices.
The west courtyard elevation features three symmetrical arched openings, with two wide segmental-arched cart arches flanking a central pedestrian entrance, all now glazed. Regularly placed modern Velux roof lights are set into the roof above. The north side of the courtyard has a ventilation duct above some of its roof lights, while the south side is clear of skylights.
The north elevation is asymmetrical and includes a modern concrete-harled lean-to addition and two later piend-roofed dormer windows. One dormer has modern glazing, while the other has been bricked up. A modern Velux roof light is positioned in the slope of the roof.
The east elevation has five bays, originally four, with a central doorway (original) and a modern boarded timber stable door. Two symmetrically placed windows flank the doorway, the outer windows being of original vertical proportions and the inner pair being modern horizontal replacements. The outer windows have plate glass sash and case glazing with modern security lighting above; the inner windows have modern glazing. Three symmetrical oculi are located at the eaves over the central entrance bay and the outer bays. A range of eight regularly placed modern Velux roof lights and a single pipe flue are set into the roof slope.
The south elevation has a modern timber stable with an overhanging roof that obscures much of the elevation, with a single window off-centre to the right.
The interior has been modernised for domestic use. Some original four-pane timber sash and case windows remain alongside modern replacements. The building is covered by a piended slate roof with roof lights and dormers. A ridge stack is located at the centre of the north range, and a later stack is at the east end of the south range.
