Description

Glencorse House Stables is a later 19th-century stable range with a lower east wing. The stable range is constructed of coursed rubble and has a slated roof. Curved screen walls contain a vehicular entrance, flanked by square piers of a later date, with pedestrian gates featuring stag antlers on pedestals and wrought-iron gates.

The south elevation’s western range has a modern glazed infill towards the centre, with a spirelet ventilator above. To the right is a blocked arch, and to the left are a 12-pane sash window and a modern patio door, alongside a replacement window. A chimney stack is situated on the gable, and there's a later flat-roofed extension to the left.

The lower east wing has a twin-gabled design with a base course, stone skews and putts, ornate stone finials, and a blind gable to the left. The right gable features a single 12-pane sash window and an infilled attic light in the gablehead, with a later chimney stack to the right, and a modern brick archway. It adjoins an older painted stone and timber glass house with an ornate metal finial.

The north elevation’s rear portion of the east wing comprises a blind wall of the glass house and a door to the right. A gable end showcases a bowed window, paired with 8-pane sash and case windows. The long western range (rear) has a skew gable with a single 6-pane light, and modern Velux dormers in the roof. A part open timber lean-to porch occupies the re-entrant angle, with a bipartite 12-pane window and twin bipartite windows at the end, with Velux roof lights to each return. A modern extension is situated to the right.

The east elevation has the glass house adjoined to a walled garden and gateway.

The west elevation adjoins the walled garden. The walled garden, possibly from the early 19th century, is built of rubble, with a later gate set into the south wall.

Most windows on the front and part of the rear are 12-pane timber sash and case, though some have been replaced. The roof is piended and slate-covered. The interior was not inspected in 2000.

The stables and walled garden formed part of the original estate of Glencorse House (listed separately) but are no longer part of the estate. This listing also includes the gate piers, gates, quadrant walls, and walled garden, and the statutory address is Gillieknowe (Former Glencorse House Stables).
