Description

Gardener's Cottage, located at The Bush House on Bush Estate, is a single-storey Picturesque cottage from the mid-19th century, featuring an additional attic, a porch, and later extensions, all with an irregular plan. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar.

The principal elevation has a main gable with a right-projecting porch addition in the re-entrant angle, which features heavy bargeboards and a diamond quarry slit window. The left gable has a two-storey single bay with sliding cases, a diamond quarry window, and a door to the left return. The right gable includes a modern door with a light above and flanking it, a slit window to the right, and a sliding window in the gable.

On the northeast elevation, the earlier rubble gable end has been built up and features twin 8-pane sash and case windows with ashlar surrounds, a plain inset plaque in the gablehead, bargeboards with a finial, and twin chimney pieces on a rectangular plinth with square tops and mismatched cans.

The southeast elevation shows a later extension with bargeboards, a door to the left, and an 8-pane sash and case window to the right. To the left return, there is a 2-pane sash and case window and a bipartite 8-pane sash and case window with a stone mullion, along with down pipes to the left and a chimney piece to the right.

The southwest elevation is one-and-a-half storeys with two bays. The ground floor features earlier construction with twin 12-pane sash and case windows. Above, there are dormers with bargeboards and decorative finials, triple-pane sliding case windows, and diamond quarry windows. Each gable has a chimney stack, and to the left, there is a later extension with a 12-pane sash and case window.

The cottage is notable for its unusual sliding casement windows with diamond quarry patterns, double on the front and triple on the back. It has a piended slate roof with overhanging eaves, white bargeboards, and rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 2000.
