Description
The Gibbs Chest Tomb, located 8 metres southeast of the south porch of the Church of Saint Margaret, dates from the mid-18th century. It is constructed from Ham stone and features Keinton inscription panels. The tomb is rectangular with semi-cylindrical ends and has a moulded plinth at the base. Proud-standing panels are present on each side and one curved panel on each end, all set within frame mouldings. The top is moulded and shaped in a hipped design. This tomb commemorates John Gibbs Senior, who died in 1735, his wife Sarah, who died in 1764, and Revd. John Gibbs Junior, who died in 1757, among others. The first inscription likely dates to 1764. The tomb is surrounded by a paved area with a kerb that was originally topped with railings.
