Description
Knowlerock Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 17th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof with gable overhangs and brick chimney stacks. The building originally had a cruciform plan and consists of two storeys with an attic, with a single bay on each face.
The east elevation has been altered and now presents four bays, with the second bay projecting and the fourth bay being a 20th-century extension that has a plain clay tile roof. The windows are primarily horizontal bar casement types, except for the upper window in bay two, which is a three-light reserve chamfer window without a label, and the upper window in bay three, which is similar but has a label and early leaded lights. There is a segmental arched doorway cut into the lower bay three, with part of the label from a former window still visible.
At the rear, there are further reserve chamfer windows, including a two-light window on the first floor and a single light window in the attic, the latter featuring vertical iron bars. Inside, the north room has a large plain chamfered camber arched fireplace, while the south room contains a fireplace with a bowed timber arch. The roof frame is a collar truss type, with collars that are half-scarfed and bolted, and the purlins are tenoned.
