Description

Moorhays Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1600 and later. It is built from local stone that has been cut and squared, with ashlar dressings. The roof is made of plain clay tiles, featuring a coved gable on the east side and a hipped roof on the west. The building has brick and stone chimney stacks and stands two storeys high with an attic.

The north elevation consists of six bays, with a circular turret at the northeast corner topped with a plain clay tile roof over stone slate base courses. There are two different patterns of string courses that are stepped in places. The windows are mostly 20th-century wood or steel casements set under exposed lintels. However, in the gables above bays three and six, there is a blocked window and a timber reserve-chamfered mullioned two-light window. There are also 18th-century casements with leaded panes in the lower bay four and upper bay six. A cambered arched doorway is located in bay five, sheltered by a 20th-century tiled hood, and there is a 20th-century stone tiled porch at bay two. An old pump in a wooden box is situated between bays three and four.

Both gable ends feature additional reserve chamfered mullioned windows at each level, with two more in the west bay of the south elevation and one blocked window in the corner. A projecting extension on the southwest corner dates from the late 18th century and has 12-pane sash windows below and 9-pane sashes above.

The interior has not been seen, but a report indicates that there has been much alteration and that the original plan is confused. It is suggested that the house may have originally been a manor.
