Description

Bower Hinton Farmhouse is a farmhouse located on Back Lane, dating from the 17th century but with medieval origins. It is constructed of ham stone, with sections of ashlar and cut and squared stone, and features a double Roman clay tiled roof with stepped coped gables and stone chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and an attic, comprising four bays, although bay one is of a different construction.

Bay one has hollow-chamfered mullioned windows, with a three-light window above and a two-light window below, the latter featuring a square label. Bay two contains ovolo-moulded windows, with a three-light window above and a four-light window below. Bay three features a two-light hollow-chamfer window above, with a label, and a cambered-arched doorway beneath a deep lintel, which has a small leaded light to the upper left. Bay four has three-light hollow-chamfer mullioned windows with labels. The coped gables have gabletted finials over bays two and four.

On the north gable, there are three two-light mullioned windows with labels, with the first-floor window being ovolo-moulded. The rear of the farmhouse has an outshut and projection under a shallow pitched Welsh slate roof. The interior has not been seen, but it is reported to have a 16-panel moulded beam ceiling in the north room, along with a cambered arched fireplace. The plan of the farmhouse has been significantly altered, but parts of the earlier frame remain, including a smoke-blackened true cruck truss and an unblackened jointed cruck.
