Description

The Dower House is a detached house located on Farm Street. It was largely constructed in the later 17th century and subsequently modified in the 20th century. The house is built of ham stone ashlar with a plain clay tile roof, coped gables, and stone slab chimney stacks. It is two storeys high with attics, and has seven bays. The eaves have a dentilled timber fascia. The windows are mullioned with two lights; the lower windows in bays 1, 2, 6, and 7 have ovolo-moulding on wave mould recesses, while the others are hollow-chamfered in plain recesses. Continuous labels are present on both levels. Bay 4 features an oval window with a carved stone wreath architrave, matching the detailing at the nearby Tintinhull House. The lower window in bay 4 has a moulded cambered arched doorway with a boarded door, the lintol being highly carved and possibly 20th century. An open stone porch with detached Tuscan columns on plinths and a segmental hood, is also likely from the early 20th century. Pitched hipped roof dormers, each with a two-light casement, are present over bays 2, 4, and 6. All windows have rectangular leaded glass. A single-storey extension of one bay to the east has a triple-roll clay tiled roof and a stepped coped east gable, featuring a window with matching hollow-chamfer mould detailing. The interior was not inspected. The house is one of three major houses in the village that were owned by the Napper family.
