Kingsland, Gatepiers And Adjoining Walls Fronting North Street

Kingsland is a house that was mainly built around 1840, with later enlargements in the late 19th century, and it incorporates parts of an earlier building from the early 17th and 18th centuries. The structure is made of red sandstone random rubble with brick dressings and quoins, topped with a three-gable slate roof featuring decorated bargeboards and brick stacks. The layout includes two rooms from a late 16th to early 17th century three-cell and cross passage house that faces south and fronts North Street. The property was refronted in the 18th century and was enlarged around 1840, with the main facade now facing north towards the gardens.

The house is two stories high with six bays, featuring sash windows with glazing bars set in brick surrounds. On the ground floor, the right side has two bays that extend out with a flat roof, and there are sash windows and a door in the chamfered left corner. The gable ends have circular, unglazed openings that are blocked with timber. There is a centrally placed flat-roofed porch supported by wooden columns, with glazed double doors.

The property also includes square red sandstone gatepiers that are rusticated and have flat caps, along with adjoining red sandstone random rubble walls that have brick coping, which sweep up towards Millets Brook to the west and Cardscroft to the east.
