Description

Gateway House is a house that dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, with a front that was remodeled in the 18th century and enlarged in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble with a rendered facade, featuring a moulded plinth and a quoin strip on the right. The building has slate roofs, with a steep pitch on the main block and a shallower pitch on the independently roofed extension. Brick stacks on the left and right indicate the extent of the original building.

The layout likely consists of two cells and a cross passage, extended by one bay to the left to include a carriageway entrance, and later extended by two bays to the right. The house is two stories high and has a symmetrical arrangement of windows: a total of five bays across the front, with sash windows. The first floor features three bays of six-pane sash windows, while the remaining windows are twelve-pane sash windows. On the ground floor, there are 20th-century windows in the two bays to the left of the doorway, with the others being twelve-pane sash windows. The square-headed carriageway entrance is located in the outer bay to the left, and there is a six-panel door in the fourth bay to the left, which is sheltered by a flat-roofed wooden porch. This porch is supported by slender columns with curved brackets that rise from imposts, forming an arch with ogee-headed returns. The interior has not been viewed.
