Description

No. 8 High Street is an early to mid-18th century building that adjoins No. 6 and stands on a slightly higher elevation. It is part of a significant group of listed buildings extending from Nos. 2 to 10 (South side), from the Crown Hotel to No. 11 (North side), and including the Market Cross and Nos. 6 to 9 (consecutive) in Market Place. The building is constructed of painted brick and has a continuous front with a plain cornice and parapet with coping. The central section projects, featuring chamfered quoins and a triangular pediment. It has three storeys and three windows to the front. The first floor retains an original sash window with a cornice on console brackets and an architrave surround. Two paired sashes are present on the first floor, while the remaining windows are four-light casements. All windows are finished with chamfered voussoirs and retain some glazing bars. A modern shop front has been installed.
