Description
No 5 on High Street is a mid to late 19th-century building that stands two storeys high. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings. The building features a modillion cornice and a parapet, with ashlar pilasters flanking the front. There are two windows with segmental heads set in rectangular moulded surrounds, complete with keystones and triangular spandrels. The sills are supported by brackets, and the windows themselves are sashes without glazing bars. The contemporary shopfront includes a doorway to the left, which has a moulded cornice, and three richly moulded volutes on the pilasters. The shop-windows are divided by slender colonettes, and there is a four-panel door to the left. This building is listed for its group value, as it is part of an important collection of listed buildings that includes the Crown Hotel, No 11 on the north side, and Nos 2 to 10, along with No 12 on the south side, as well as the Market Cross and Nos 6 to 9 in the Market Place.
