Description
Lloyds Bank is a tall neo-Gothic building located on the north side of High Street, constructed in 1885 by G M Tilley. The building features ashlar stonework and stands three storeys high with attics. It is characterized by twin gables with parapets and finials above a cornice adorned with paterae and grotesque masks. The façade includes sill bands and stringcourses, with buttresses that have set-offs flanking the front.
There are two small decorative openings in the gables, and a shield with a swag and the date 1885 is positioned between them. The building has three windows with one and two lights, all featuring roll mouldings and cusped heads. The first floor has a small central bay with a crenellated parapet and three lights. The sash windows do not have glazing bars.
The ground floor is divided into five bays by half-shafts that rise from a moulded plinth, each bay containing two Tudor lights with a crenellated transom. To the right, there is an arched entrance with foliated spandrels and a pointed wooden door. This building, along with the listed buildings from the Crown Hotel to No 11 on the north side, Nos 2 to 10, No 12 on the south side, and the Market Cross with Nos 6 to 9 in the Market Place, forms an extremely important group.
