Description

Sundial Cottage is a cottage dated 1765, situated in Charlton Horethorne. It is constructed of local stone, cut and squared, with clay double Roman tiles to the roof and brick end chimney stacks. The cottage follows an 'L' plan, originally comprising three bays over two storeys, with a 20th-century one-bay extension added to the southwest corner. The windows are steel casements set within original openings; the ground floor windows have deep stone lintols with segmental arched recesses, and timber lintols above. A plain boarded door is located between the second and third bays, sheltered by a moulded flat stone hood supported on shaped brackets. Above the door is a projecting plaque displaying a sundial, incised with "Robert Penny 1765." A modern extension replicates the style and window motif of the original building. The interior has not been inspected.
