Middle Brown Farmhouse and Outbuilding Adjoining to East

Middle Brown Farmhouse and the adjoining outbuilding are 17th-century structures, with possible enlargement in the 18th century at the west end. The farmhouse is built of random rubble local stone and has roughcast on the south and west fronts, featuring rendered flat surrounds to the windows on the facade. The outbuilding is constructed from coursed white quartz stone and flat bedded grey rubble, topped with a steeply pitched corrugated asbestos roof that is hipped to the left. There is a lower addition with a slate roof at the east gable end, and a stone stack with a rebuilt brick chimney is located at the right gable end, while another stone stack marks the end of the original dwelling between the second and third bays on the left.

The plan of the farmhouse is not clear without an internal inspection, but it is thought to be a two-cell and cross passage house that has been enlarged at the west end, with a loft and bedroom over the scullery and an outshut at the rear. The building has two storeys and features a 2:3 bay arrangement. A gabled dormer rises from the eaves of the second bay on the left, and there are two early 19th-century three-light leaded iron casements on the first floor. The ground floor has a large 19th-century wooden casement to the left of the former entrance, a boarded-up window to the right, and the original entrance is located in the second bay on the right, consisting of a six-panel door with two inserted lights and a pentice hood porch. The present entrance is now in the first bay on the left, featuring a plank door. The right return faces the road and has a loft opening.

The single-storey outbuilding adjoining the right gable end has an enlarged square-headed opening on the left, with two plank doors in the center and an unglazed window opening on the right. The upper portion of the right-hand wall is cemented over, and there is some cement around the left entrance. The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey but is thought to contain features of interest. The farm is mentioned in mid-17th-century documents, and the settlement is known to have early medieval origins.
