Description
West Coombe Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations and enlargements including southeast and northwest additions dated 1711, and a mid-19th century southwest wing. The building is constructed from slobbered rubble with cob at the rear and features a hipped slate roof with hipped wings on the facade. There is a rebuilt brick stack between the second and third bays on the left and a 19th century brick stack on the right gable end. The farmhouse is arranged in a U-plan, originally consisting of two cells and a cross passage with outshots at the rear. It has been enlarged with a southeast wing, an extended west gable end, and a southwest wing added, with a stair inserted at the rear of the through passage.
The structure is two storeys high and has a layout of 1:4:1 bays. The first floor features blind openings in the second bay on the left and the end bay on the right. The ground floor has entrances in the outer bays, with the second bay on the left and the center flanked by two early 18th century wooden cruciform windows with leading. There are also 19th century windows under wooden lintels. The principal entrance has a shell hood porch and a flush panel door, while to the left is an 18th century plank door with a rectangular light above, a stable door in the wing, and a 20th century door in the right-hand wing. The northwest gable end at the rear has a datestone inscribed "RD RL 1711," possibly reset from a more prominent position on the facade.
Inside, to the right of the cross passage, the parlour features an early 18th century moulded plaster ceiling, a panelled dado, and shutters to the window. There are unusual segmental-headed shouldered surrounds to a niche in the rear wall and the entrance to the cross passage, along with a shouldered chimney piece with egg and dart moulding. The bedroom above is accessed via another shell hood porch and has a coved cornice. The study in the southeast wing includes an 18th century chimneypiece and panelled cupboards. An early 19th century leaded iron casement is visible in the northeast wing, and 19th century timbers can be seen in the roof space. This farmhouse is an interesting survival of an early 18th century refurbishment.
