Description

This milestone, dating from the 1820s, is made of sandstone and cast iron and stands about 350 mm high. It features a slightly cambered head and has a benchmark on the right side. An attached plaque has a semi-circular headed central section with the incised lettering "8 miles to Watchet." The road on which it stands, connecting Timberscombe to the Devon border, was turnpiked following an Act of 1822 and was supervised by William McAdam, the son of the more famous J L McAdam, with completion in 1827.
