Description
Raleigh's Cross is a boundary cross dating from the 13th century, made of red sandstone. It features the remains of a square shaft set in an octagonal socket, which is damaged and stands about 700 millimeters high. The socket has broached corners and rests on a square base, which may now be hidden beneath the earth. The cross was first mentioned in 1425-6 when it was located to the north at the junction of five ways, now reduced to four, near a dangerous bog. It was relocated to its current position in the late 18th to early 19th century.
