Description
Chidgley Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with external alterations made in the early 19th century and internal changes in the mid-20th century. The architect responsible for the 19th-century alterations may have been Richard Carver. The building features roughcast over rubble, a double span slate roof with coped verges and kneelers at the gabled porch, a stone stack on the left with a brick top, and a roughcast external stepped stack on the right, also with a brick top. The farmhouse has a parallel range plan, consisting of three cells with a central porch and a narrower rear range. It exhibits Tudor style detailing typical of 17th-century architecture. The structure is two storeys high and has a layout of two bays, one bay, and two bays. All windows are set under square hood moulds, with eight-pane sash windows on the first floor and 16-pane sash windows on the ground floor to the right, while there are two 20th-century metal windows to the left. Stepped buttresses are positioned between the bays. The central porch features a three-light hollow chamfered mullion on the first floor, a moulded four-centred arch opening, which may date from the 17th century, and lancets on the returns, along with a 20th-century half-glazed inner door. The farmhouse is mentioned in an early 19th-century survey of the Nettlecombe Estate.
