Description
Nettlecombe Lodge is a lodge for Nettlecombe Court, now known as Leonard Wills Field Centre and currently a private dwelling. It was built around 1820 and enlarged in the mid to late 20th century, likely by Richard Carver. The building features a rendered exterior over random rubble, slate roofs, overhanging eaves, decorative bargeboards, and brick stacks on the left and right. The original block is a single storey with a 1:2 bay arrangement, including a recessed bay on the left. It has 2-light hollow chamfered mullions with Tudor arch heads and marginal glazing bars, as well as a similar design under a hood mould on the return of the projecting main block on the right. There is a blocked Tudor arch head opening, which may have been the original entrance, and a 20th-century wooden 2-light Tudor arch head casement on the right, along with a canted bay featuring 4-light hollow chamfered mullions, Tudor arch heads, and marginal glazing bars. To the left, there is a 2-bay verandah supported by wooden columns, a single bay return, and a 2-light window on the right return. The entrance is now located in a 20th-century 2-storey, 2-bay addition that includes a garage on the right. The lodge is an attractive structure that has been sympathetically enlarged and is similar in design to Willett Lodge in Elworthy Parish, which is also attributed to Richard Carver.
