Description

Chidgley Cottage is a cottage that was originally built in the late 17th century, later enlarged in the 18th century, and altered in the late 20th century. It has been rendered over rubble and cob, with a thatched roof that is half hipped on the left side. The cottage features rendered stacks at the gable end on the right and over the current entrance.

The original plan likely consisted of two cells, with the entrance now located via a curing chamber at the left stack. There is a one-bay addition on the left with a projection at the rear, and another addition on the right at the rear. The building is one and a half storeys tall, with all 20th-century wooden two-light casements. The original dwelling has two gabled dormers, and there is a small inserted window above the current entrance below the eaves. On the ground floor, there are two windows to the left of the entrance, a pair of windows in the center with buttresses between, and one window to the right of a subsidiary gabled entrance, which now also serves as a window, with a buttress beyond. The porch is rendered and has a ribbed door, topped by a slate pentice roof.

The interior was altered in the late 20th century and features two very roughly chamfered lateral beams with step and run-out stops in two rooms on the right, along with axial beams on the left. The stairs are located to the left of the right gable end, with the left stack containing the curing chamber, which now has a curved entrance bay, and a bread oven on the right. The roof structure includes collar and principal rafters.

The cottage was formerly known as Japonica Cottage.
