Description
Abbey Mill House is a corn mill and miller's house that has been converted into a dwelling. It dates from the 17th century and stands on the site of an earlier mill. The building was altered in the 18th century, enlarged in the mid-19th century, and had its windows changed in the late 20th century. The exterior is rendered over rubble with a hipped slate roof. The structure is L-shaped, with the mill on the right and the house on the left, both under one roof, and an addition at the rear. It has two storeys and five bays, featuring irregularly placed windows, including 20th-century metal casements. The loft door is located in the centre, with a three-light casement window to the left of the entrance and a stable door to the right. The entrance has remnants of a raised and fielded panel door with inserted lights and a 20th-century porch. The loft door is also found in the right return gable end.
Inside, it appears that the building was originally designed as two cells with a cross passage, with the right half serving as the mill and an attached two-bay shelter shed that once housed a waterwheel, which has since been removed. The walls were raised in the 18th century, possibly when the shelter shed was incorporated into the building, which now functions as a garage. The main interest of Abbey Mill House lies in the large amount of milling machinery that remains, largely unchanged since milling operations ceased in the 1940s. This property is located on the site of the mill associated with Cleeve Abbey.
