Description

Clifford House is a detached house, built in 1820, one of a pair of virtually identical properties. It is constructed of ashlar, with end pilasters, and has a hipped slate roof with two ridge brick stacks on ashlar bases. The design is austere and symmetrical, typical of a classical villa. The two-storey house has three bays, featuring sash windows with glazing bars, set in a very slight segmental headed recess on the ground floor. A plain first-floor band runs around the building. The central entrance has a six-panelled door, the top four panels glazed, and an iron tent canopy verandah supported by decorative cast-iron members. The interior retains original doors and window shutters on both ground and first floors; the left-hand ground floor room has an unaltered fireplace. Clifford House forms an unusual group with the neighbouring property at No 23, Bountrol, on Bath Road.
