Description
No. 4 Townsend is a detached house that was previously a manse and an inn, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of cut and squared Ham stone with ashlar dressings, topped with a double Roman clay tiled roof that features coped gables and stone slab chimney stacks. The east elevation has two storeys and three bays. The first bay is ashlar faced and contains three-light plain mullioned windows with rectangular leaded lights, along with some iron-framed opening lights that have curved stays. The upper bays two and three feature small three-light leaded casement windows of an early pattern, while the lower bay two has a 20th-century leaded casement window, and the lower bay three has a three-light stone mullioned window of uncertain date. Between the first and second bays is a plain doorway with a beaded surround and a six-panelled door. There are additional leaded windows at the rear, along with a lean-to and a major 20th-century extension. The building was acquired as a manse for the Baptist Chapel in 1830, which was located adjacent to this property, and it later became known as the Shoemaker's Arms Inn.
