Description

This is an early 19th-century house, possibly incorporating an earlier structure, situated at the end of a row in Montacute. The house is constructed of ham stone ashlar with a double Roman clay tiled roof, featuring stepped coped gables and yellow brick end chimney stacks. It has two storeys and three bays. The windows are sash windows with 12 panes, set within stone architraves. The central doorway has a 20th-century panelled door within a recessed architrave, topped by a flat hoodmould. Straight joints suggest that there were originally two doorways, although a 20th-century casement window now occupies the space to the right of the door. The interior remains unseen. Attached to the south-east corner is a wing wall with simple coving, leading to a segmental-arched gateway with a keystones and a pair of boarded gates. This links to No. 20, which is set at right angles on the corner of an important open space in the centre of the village.
