Description

Montacute Baptist Church, built in 1879 by Morgan H. Davies, is a Baptist church constructed from ham stone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof featuring coped gables. Designed in an Early English style, it has gable ends facing the road. The main gable includes a geometric rose window beneath a trefoil gable vent, with a cusped label in a pointed segmental-arched recess to the left. On the south-west corner, there is a quasi-turret with a gable end that has a segmental-arched doorway flanked by Gothic foliated capital shafts under a label roll. Above this doorway is a wide cusped lancet and a clock face in the gable. Leading to the first floor of the turret is an open covered stair with a pitched Welsh slate roof, supported by arches and pillars that match the doorway. There are cast iron finials on both gables and a 20th-century chimney stack on the north-west corner. The foundation stone on the front wall displays the date and architect's name. The south side elevation features four pairs of pointed segmental-arched windows under a continuous label. Attached to the rear is a seven-bay schoolroom block with sash windows below and semi-circular arched casements above, all under a continuous arched label, along with a further extension to the east. The interior has not been seen. Approximately 10 meters to the west, there is a front boundary wall made of ashlar with a plinth and angled coping, featuring square piers with frieze bands and bell-hip caps. The railings have taper points on the middle and top rails, with fleur-de-lys tops on the arch-braced standards and matching gates, enhancing the church's setting.
