Description
Bradley House is a country house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with significant alterations made in the late 18th and 19th centuries, including changes to the roof. The building is constructed from coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings and features a double Roman tile roof that runs north-south. It has a square plan and includes full-height, flat-roofed square bays set diagonally at each corner, topped with tall brick stacks from the 19th century, which are thought to be an Elizabethan design.
The house has three storeys, with two bays on each elevation. Each bay features a single window on every floor, with 12-pane sash windows in reused ovolo-moulded stone architraves on the lower floors, and 6-pane sash windows on the second floor in similar surrounds. The windows in each bay are painted to appear as false windows, and there are continuous weathered strings that rise into hood moulds on the ground and first floors. At the rear, there is a large, irregularly placed stairlight with a semi-circular head and a 22-pane sash window.
The central door opening on the west elevation has paired two-panelled doors and a gabled hood supported by consoles. The interior was almost completely refitted in the late 18th century, including doors and window shutters. However, there are two early fireplaces with stone surrounds featuring 4-centred heads and elaborate moulding, as well as a similar fireplace on the second floor, with the potential for further fireplaces to be uncovered.
