Description
Court Barn is a tithe barn that was originally built for Glastonbury Abbey and is now used as a field barn. It dates from the early 15th century and was restored in the early 20th century. The barn is constructed of coursed and squared lias with freestone dressings, including quoins, and features a tiled roof with coped verges on kneelers that have bases for finials, as well as some stone tiles at the eaves.
The barn has a rectangular plan and is supported by four three-quarter height, two-stage buttresses with offsets on the north and south sides, and an additional buttress of the same style at the west end. There are cruciform breathers on both the gable faces to the east and west. The barn has a central projecting carriageway on the north and south sides, featuring a swept down roof and broad door openings with chamfered and stopped dressed stone jambs. The north side has a cambered wooden lintel, while the south side has a 20th-century lintel. The doors are paired vertical planks with wrought-iron strap hinges.
Inside, the barn has six roof trusses that create five bays, with base crucks and a heavy tie that caps the lower principals. The tie stands on an A-frame and features archbracing, with some evidence of windbracing. There is a single-storey extension on the east return, which has a triple Roman tile roof and a narrow door opening with dressed stone jambs on the north side. Inside this extension, there are niches for birds, and similar niches can be found on the east gable wall of the barn, along with traces of the remains of a former larger extension.
