Description
The Mells War Memorial features a Tuscan column made of Purbeck marble, topped with a figure of St George slaying the dragon. The column stands on a tall, narrow, square pedestal made of Portland stone, which bears the inscription: "THE GREAT WAR 1914-18/ WE DIED IN/ A STRANGE LAND/ FACING/ THE DARK CLOUD/ OF WAR/ AND THIS STONE/ IS RAISED TO US/ IN THE HOME/ OF OUR DELIGHT/ MCMXIV & MCMXIX." Above the pedestal is a cross.
On either side of the pedestal, there are panels of Portland stone inscribed with the names of those who fell. Curved flanking walls made of coursed and squared Doulting rubble extend outward from either side, stepping back at each end. Above these walls is a formal yew hedge.
On either side of the central recess for wreaths, there are plain stone benches set on solid bellied plinths. Above each bench are circular memorial plaques from 1945 inscribed with "MCMXXXIX/ MCMXLV," along with the names of the fallen. The benches are positioned on a shallow ashlar platform that has two steps, extending across the front of the memorial.
