Description
The gatepiers, gates, and wall fronting the road of Nos 1-4 Bartholomew Thomas Almshouses were built in 1905. They consist of red sandstone coursed and squared rubble walls that are approximately 750 mm high, topped with saddle back coping. The walls support low cast iron railings and are flanked by pyramid-topped piers that stand about 1.25 metres high. The structure features five bays arranged in a 5:3:3:3:2 pattern, with four simple wrought iron gates that have uprights and diagonal struts. The straightforward and unusual detailing of these elements contrasts with the gabled and dormered picturesque design of the Bartholomew Thomas Almshouses.
