Description

The Malthouse, located 10 metres east of Hill Farmhouse, is a disused malthouse dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. It is constructed of random rubble, render, and cob, with a 20th-century hipped slate roof and a centrally placed 18th-century brick stack below the ridge. The main block shows evidence of a demolished projecting wing to the left of centre, with remains of a large stack and fireplace visible on the facade.

The building is two storeys high, featuring a three-light ovolo moulded mullion window (unglazed) to the right of the stack remains, and a similar unmoulded four-light window to the left. There is a four-centred arch doorway to the right with remnants of an early plank door, and a similar doorway to the left, which is distinguished by a flight of four steps. An unusually fine moulded ashlar double opening for a bread oven is present on the facade. The left return elevation is built into the hillside and appears to be single storey, with two window openings that originally lit the upper floor of the building; this area is now open to the rafters in the left-hand, main portion.
