  • II

Wall and letter box. Letter box, produced 1857-59, probably reset in wall. By Smith and Hawkes of Birmingham for the Post Office. Cast iron. Rectangular aperture with added hood obscuring the words Post Office, below rectangular moulded section divided vertically into 4 unequal parts; below apeture are inscribed the words: LETTER BOX, CLEARED AT, with VR and a crown inserted between, the second panel obscured by attached piece of plastic, third and largest section topped with added slot for numbers, keyhole bottom left, lower panel blank. Wall, red sandstone random rubble about 1.25 metres high and 9 metres long, curved with chamfered coping of alternate brick and concrete render. Letter box opening surrounded by irregular brickwork, left half of wall obscured by ivy at the time of survey (January 1984). This is an example of the first standard wall box produced for the Post Office, known as the WB72, only 7 of which are known to survive in England. (The Letter Box Study Group).
