Description

This is a wall and letter box located in Stawley, dating from 1857 to 1859. The letter box was made by Smith and Hawkes of Birmingham for the Post Office and is crafted from cast iron. It features a rectangular opening with an added hood that obscures the words "Post Office." Below the opening is a rectangular moulded section divided into four unequal parts. The inscription "LETTER BOX, CLEARED AT" is present, with "VR" and a crown between the second panel, which is obscured by a piece of plastic. The third and largest section has an added slot for numbers, while the keyhole is located at the bottom left, and the lower panel is blank.

The wall is constructed of red sandstone random rubble, standing about 1.25 meters high and extending 9 meters long. It has a curved shape with chamfered coping made of alternating brick and concrete render. The letter box opening is surrounded by irregular brickwork, and at the time of the survey in January 1984, the left half of the wall was obscured by ivy. This letter box is an example of the first standard wall box produced for the Post Office, known as the WB72, with only seven known to survive in England.
