Description
The wall surrounding Cannington College, which also borders the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, is likely from the 17th century. It runs almost continuously around the college grounds on the north, south, east, and west sides. Constructed from red sandstone rubble, the wall features low single-stage red sandstone buttresses at intervals with rubble offsets. It stretches 130 meters along Fore Street, 70 meters along Brook Street, and 50 meters along Church Street, with a broad gateway onto Brook Street that has plank gates. Additionally, there is a further section extending 100 meters westward from the southern end on Brook Street. The wall varies in height between 3 and 4 meters and likely marks the boundary of the lay wing of the Priory of Benedictine Nuns, which was located at the site of Cannington Court.
