Description
This building, known as No 1 Fore Street, is a house dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of red sandstone ashlar with painted, emphasised chamfered quoins. The facade features a moulded cornice and a tall parapet with corner pilasters, creating an elevated centre section. This section has pilasters that form five blank 'window' openings, and the overall moulded parapet has coped verges and a double Roman tile roof with end brick stacks.
The symmetrical facade has two storeys and an attic, comprising five bays with flush mounted 12-pane sash windows that have exposed sash boxes. The windows are highlighted by emphasised voussoirs and prominent triple keystones. The central door opening is framed by an architrave with square block rustication on the jambs, topped by a cinqpartite keystone that extends through a pulvinated frieze to a triangular pediment, featuring paired 20th-century glazed doors.
On each gable of the returns, there are two blank circular openings set in dressed stone surrounds. There is also a secondary wing that is two storeys high, has three bays, and is set back on each side, with 20th-century casements.
