Description
The Cottage is a 16th-century cottage that has undergone alterations, possibly in the 18th century and late 20th century. It features a partially rendered exterior over red sandstone random rubble and has a thatched roof with brick stacks located at the right gable end and left of centre. Originally designed with three cells and a cross passage, it is now configured as two cells with a lobby entry. The building has two storeys and three bays, with 20th-century two-light casement windows. The ground floor has three-light windows in the outer bays and a two-light window in the centre right, which is situated below a wooden lintel, while there is a blocked opening to the left beneath a larger wooden lintel. The entrance is located at the rear, and it is likely that there was originally a cross passage entrance with a two-light window and an original window opening to the left. The left return of the facade wall appears to break off, suggesting it may have originally extended one bay further.
Inside, there are two piers of exposed jointed cruck trusses, approximately seven metres apart, with a principal rafter between them. The original cross passage fireplace features a chamfered lintel that is slightly arched, and there is a four-centred arched chamfered door frame, with a 20th-century door to the left. The interior also includes chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, and another four-centred arch door frame can be found on the first floor. It is noted that the south end wall may have been rebuilt following fire damage to the third room.
