Description

This is an 18th-century house with a shop, situated within a row on High Street in Bruton. The front is built of Doulting stone ashlar, with a stone slate Mansard roof featuring plain gables behind a parapet, and brick end chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high with attic windows.

The ground floor features a low plinth and cornice, topped with a plain low parapet. A central door consists of six panels, surmounted by a radially glazed fanlight, set within a stone surround of attached Doric columns supporting an open pediment. To the left, an 18th-century shopfront is present, with two two-pane bow windows framing a part-glazed door featuring a fanlight above. A simple wooden signboard is positioned above the shopfront. In the lower bay to the right is a composite sash window with eight-12-eight panes, set under an exposed timber lintel. The first floor contains three architraved surrounds to plain sash windows. The roof is punctuated by three small, raked dormers, each with a two-light casement window. Lead rainwater stackheads are located on either side. The interior has not been inspected.

Historically, the building was part of the White Hart Inn, which originated in the 16th century. The front of the inn was destroyed by a fire in the 18th century. In 1798, it operated as an ironmonger’s and this use continued into October 1983.
