Description
The Blue Ball Public House is an 18th-century inn located on the west side of Coome Street in Bruton. Constructed around 1765 to 1770, it replaced an earlier building, the White Hart Inn, which was known to have existed before 1581. The inn is built of local stone, rendered and painted, with stone dressings and a double Roman clay tile roof with plain gables. Brick chimney stacks are also present. The facade is five bays wide, facing the street, with 12-pane sash windows on both levels in bays 2 and 3. Bay 1 is blank on the upper level and features a wrought iron bracket supporting a hanging sign. The upper level includes a pedimented doorway with Doric pilasters in bay 4, framing a four-panel door. Bay 5 features angled, two-storey bay windows, wider with a double sash window at the lower level. Matching elevators are located inside the yard. The interior retains panelling and other features from the 18th century.
