Description
St Michael's Church Tower, formerly known as St Michael's Chapel, is a Grade I listed structure that remains from the medieval church, with the tower dating from the late 13th century and featuring Perpendicular additions. The tower, which lacks an upper storey, was restored in 1804 and consists of three storeys. It has corner buttresses, stringcourses, and Perpendicular bell-openings topped with battlements. Below the parapet, there is a sculptured tablet of an eagle, and the west face includes seven canopied niches. The lower storey showcases Y-tracery, while the deeply moulded west door is adorned with carved reliefs. This tower is a prominent feature of the Somerset landscape and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, currently under the care of the National Trust.
