Description

Burton Cottage Farmhouse is a 15th or 16th century farmhouse that has been modified over time. It is constructed of rubble stonework with Ham stone dressings, some cob walling, and is mostly rendered and colourwashed. The roof is thatched with simple verges and an uneven ridge on the south-east end. Brick chimney stacks are located at the ends and centre of the building.

The farmhouse is an example of a cross-entry long-house design, originally a single storey with an attic, and comprises four bays. A 3-light casement window is in the first bay. The second bay features a 3-light stone mullioned window with rectangular leaded panes and a label, with a 3-light casement window above, flanked by lean-to buttresses. A plain entrance door and a small, single-light casement window are in the third bay, with a 2-light casement window above. A 2-light leaded window in an artificial stone surround is in the fourth bay.

The interior is not visible but is reported to contain jointed cruck trusses with straight windbraces and some wattle and daub partitions. The fourth bay was used as an agricultural store and stable until 1975.
