Description
The Market House, built between 1770 and 1772 by amateur architect Copleston Warre Bampfylde, is a significant structure that underwent radical alterations in 1932 by H S W Stone. The building consists of a central block with two storeys, an attic, and a basement, which was originally flanked by one-storey arcaded open markets. In 1932, new two-storey wings were added. The exterior is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. A pediment was added to the north front, and there is a sill band and string course beneath the first-floor windows. The building has five sash windows with glazing bars, and the central first-floor window is highlighted by an architrave surround and a pediment supported by consoles. Below this window, a balustraded apron connects to a rusticated round-headed doorway topped with a cornice on volutes, which features a semi-circular fanlight and a four-panel door. Wrought-iron spiked railings flank the doorway. The Market House is a prominent building in a key location. It forms an important group with No 1A Billet Street, No 66 the County Hotel, the Brendon Bar, and No 8 East Street, along with other listed buildings in Cheapside, Fore Street, and the Parade.
