Description
The National Westminster Bank is a large bank building located on Fore Street, dating from 1857. It features a curved front that aligns with Corporation Street and stands three storeys tall, constructed of ashlar with a slate roof. The building has a deep cornice with brackets and a parapet. Banded pilasters are present on the curved corner and the elevations facing Corporation Street. There are 12 windows in total, with 7 facing Fore Street. The windows have moulded architrave surrounds, and a mix of plain cornices and segmental pediments on consoles above the first-floor windows. A sill band runs beneath the first floor, and there is a cornice over the ground floor. The ground floor openings, which correspond with the windows above, feature round heads, an impost stringcourse, and carved keystones. The sashes do not have glazing bars. There are two entrances on Fore Street, each with double 4-panel doors. Additionally, there is a two-storey extension to the left on Corporation Street. This building is part of an important group that includes No 1A Billet Street, No 66 The County Hotel, the Brendon Bar, and No 8 East Street, along with other listed buildings in Cheapside, Fore Street, and the Parade.
