Description
Castle Bow is a Grade I listed building that originally served as the East Gate to the Castle precincts. It dates back to the 13th century and features chamfered arches and corner buttresses with setoffs. The ground floor is constructed of ashlar stone, while the upper levels are made of rubble with ashlar dressings. The building has a crenellated parapet and the front facing Castle Green is three stories high, showcasing Georgian and later Gothic sash windows. There is a much weathered carved stone tablet, and each front of the building has similar windows along with carvings of a bishop's mitre and a sham portcullis. Castle Bow is now part of the Castle Hotel. All the listed buildings on Castle Green, including Ina Cottage and Mill Lane, form a cohesive group.
