Description
The Castle Hotel, originally facing North Street, has a frontage on Castle Green that was once known as Clarke's Hotel. The main stone front, likely built in the late 18th century, features a bowed crenellated wing at the north end. The upper storey is a 20th-century addition. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and includes stringcourses. It has 2 and 3-light windows with mullions and transoms, and leaded casements. The north wing and Castle Bow have pointed sash windows with 'Gothic' glazing bars. The central range of seven windows is said to have had similar window styles. A projecting porch with a crenellated parapet sits on an entablature supported by four octagonal shafts, leading to double wooden doors at the entrance. The listed buildings on Castle Green, including Ina Cottage on Mill Lane, form a cohesive group.
