Description
This building is a timber frame structure consisting of two bays of almshouses, dating from around 1500. It features a restored wattle-and-daub infilling and has a pitched tile roof with gabled ends. The two bays originally belonged to old almshouses located on St James' Street, which were demolished in 1897. The structure was re-erected in the former Castle moat in 1899 and then dismantled and re-erected again at its current location in 1992. The surviving timber framing accommodates two single-room dwellings, each with doors and windows on both the front and back walls. The eaves are boldly overhanging and framed on projecting brackets. The timber frame is believed to predate 1500. All the listed buildings on Castle Green form a group with Ina Cottage on Mill Lane.
