Description
Batcombe House is a rectory that has been converted into a house, dating from the late 18th century and incorporating elements from the 17th century. The building features an ashlar stone front, with rubble and some render on the sides. It has a cornice and a slated mansard roof, with rendered stacks on slightly projecting chimney-breasts and coped verges. There are five 20th-century box dormers with sash windows.
The symmetrical three-unit frontage is designed in a Classical style, with two bays on either side of a central bay that slightly projects under a triangular pediment topped with an urn finial and a disguised chimney. The façade includes 12-pane sash windows set in reveals. The central door opening features a six-panelled door with an open triangular pediment supported by three-quarter Roman-Doric columns and a section of entablature. The cornice extends over six-pane sidelights on either side of the door. To the right, there is a late 19th-century addition with a 12-pane sash window.
At the rear, there is a 17th-century mullioned window. Inside, some doors are made from cut-down and reused 17th-century panelling. The interior also includes 18th-century features such as ornamental plasterwork and chimneypieces, as well as a late 19th-century staircase.
